EXPLORING THE IDENTITY OF INDONESIAN K-DRAMA FANS THROUGH LANGUAGE USE AND SOCIAL MEDIA FEATURES ON X (TWITTER)

Abstract

Abstract: Korean Wave has become a significant phenomenon in Indonesia, particularly through K-Dramas that attract young audiences and lead to the formation of fandoms. This study was conducted to examine how members of these fandoms express their identity and make their presence visible in Indonesian society. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research explores language use and social media features as tools of identity expression. The findings indicate that Indonesian K-Drama fans employ slang and code-mixing in their interactions on X, and highlight their identity through bios and hashtags by mentioning Korean actors, drama titles, and fandom names. Another finding is the use of three languages, which are Indonesian, Korean, and English, with English serving an important role for building connections, seeking support, and sharing drama reviews. These results contribute to the understanding of language use and identity construction within online fandom communities.
