Gamification Preferences in Learning Multiplication: A Need Analysis Among Elementary School Students

Abstract


Multiplication operation material is often a challenge for some students. Various factors are the causes of students' difficulties in understanding multiplication operations, one of which is the lack of variety in the use of learning media that is able to visualize the concept of multiplication in a concrete and interesting way that is able to bridge the abstract concept of multiplication. The research aims to identify specific needs for learning media and serve as a guideline for developers in designing learning media that is more innovative, effective, and in accordance with the needs of students. This research uses a qualitative method. The research time will be carried out in the range of May 2025. The population of this study is focused on teachers and students in grade IV, which totals 28 students. This study applied data collection techniques that included interviews with teachers and students, as well as the submission of a closed questionnaire on the Guttman scale. The data analysis technique used is descriptive analysis. The results of the analysis show that students need digital learning media that is interactive, visual-centric, has game features, is contextual, relevant, able to provide feedback, and media that can accommodate concrete, varied, and collaborative media needs. Therefore, it is concluded that to increase students' understanding of the concept of multiplication, the media that can be developed are multimedia-based digital applications and concrete learning media based on learning kits.
