Abstract

This study aims to examine the contradictions in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in economics education, specifically the benefits of AI as an educational innovation versus the risk of exacerbating the digital divide. This descriptive qualitative study was conducted at SMAN 1 Turen by collecting primary data through in-depth interviews and participatory observation of students who regularly use AI as a tool to aid their economics studies. Analysis results indicate that AI has become the students’ primary choice for understanding course material and completing school assignments. On the positive side, AI enhances the efficiency of the learning process, simplifies abstract economic concepts, and facilitates flexible personalized learning. However, its use also fosters excessive reliance among students, weakens critical analysis skills, and leads to cognitive offloading that reduces deep knowledge retention. Furthermore, disparities in access to devices, internet stability, and digital literacy competencies create significant gaps in the effectiveness of AI among students. These findings underscore the dual nature of AI as both a driver of progress and a reinforcer of educational inequality. Therefore, the integration of AI requires innovative teaching strategies, the strengthening of digital literacy, and teacher supervision to ensure its benefits are optimal and equitable for all students.
